Performing art is a branch of the arts that deals with the short-term presentation of artistic content. Because of its rapid transience, it is also known as temporary art. The term ephemeral comes from the ancient Greek spoken word “ephemeros” and means “only for one day.”

The performing arts (also defined as a combination of fine art and performance art) are divided into the theater, dance, media art, and conceptual art.

The theater as such can, in turn, be divided into its categories, drama and musical theater as well as cabaret. In dance, a distinction is made between classical ballet and modern dance and eurythmy.

What are performing artists?

The performing arts include all the forms of art based on ephemeral performances or representations. This art is also referred to as temporary art, which comes from the Greek and translated means “for a day.”

Even if the performing arts can now be recorded using television or video, it remains process-based instead of factory-oriented, making it in contrast to the visual arts.

The so-called “fine arts” are included in the performing arts. It is understood to mean a classic art form. Besides, it also has a variety of modern forms of expression, some of which overlap with other genres.

The performing arts include theater, for example. It is subdivided into drama and improvisational theater, opera, operetta and musical, puppet and object theater, and cabaret.

The latter includes cabaret as well as comedy, circus, magic, variety, black theater, marionette and hand puppet theater, storytelling (for example of fairy tales or legends) and recitations (readings, scenic readings and the modern forms of reading stage and slam poetry) and the pantomime.

Another sub-group, dance, includes classical and modern ballet, dance theater, modern dance, and contemporary dance forms.

The media art division includes film art and sound art, particularly as these relate to the ephemeral parts of music, for example, in concerts or radio art as a radio play, audio art or feature, and internet art.

Readings – especially the scenic ones – can also be staged.

What does a performing artist do?

Performance art will designate an artist’s practice focusing radically on the acting and the immediacy of its signifying power—it defies the conventions of representation. A contempt is already reflected in the renunciation of the shaping of an object, of a piece of art.

Therefore, it is still distinguishing the performance within the meaning of art-performance. In a sense, the performance means the effectuation of any action on stage, including theatrical, in any style, including more conventional.

In this light of which, we will distinguish performance art as well as live art. Now, this term is turned around again wholly if it is translated into French. Indeed, our own “performing arts” are none other than the performing arts in the broadest sense …

Action painting

The New York visual arts scene, which the influx of exiles from Europe has made predominant, lives in the age of action-painting by Jackson Pollock. The legitimation of the work can only be understood there through the active presence of the artist’s whole person in an overflow of the material and the frame.

The Happenings

The happenings developed in the 1960s. But from the mid-1950s, specific experiments by David Tudor, John Cage, and Robert Rauschenberg let them predict.

The happenings involve several stakeholders, artists from various disciplines, or not artists, in the multiplication and clash of totally heterogeneous actions, willingly provocative, devoid of any narrative coherence or illustrative intention. They often provoke the direct involvement of their “audience”, which is supposed to cease to be one.

Making room for improvisation, a number of happenings nonetheless develop based on previously fixed intentions and principles, often with a conceptual scope.

Fluxus can be considered a network of artists who have worked in the more general sense of happenings at the risk of being opposed by very purist denials. But this by finding a specific, experimental color in the characteristics of having been very international, with episodic and elliptical resonance effects, and of having known the participation of a high proportion of musicians and composers (John Cage, La Monte Young, Yoko Ono), inclined to approaches on scores.

Within Fluxus, the conceptual reversals were cultivated by which everything is art, and nothing is art, not without an echo of Marcel Duchamp and his ready-mades.

The Events

The Event relates very precisely to the work of choreographer Merce Cunningham – himself very close to Fluxus. The event consists of presenting dance performances in all types of places not explicitly designed for this purpose. It is done according to random modes of execution of extracts from pre-existing pieces also selected at random.

The Improvisation

The improvisation is a component of willingly participating in this modality of artistic activity that is performance. The improvisation can conceal the dimensions of unpredictability, random, and overflow academic frameworks.

So many characteristics capable of combining with the willingly disruptive aim, which is that of performance. But this pairing is by no means automatic, nor necessary. Indeed, many performances come under very rigorously established protocols and present operating methods, ultimately an unfolding, strictly established – this being distinguished from the possibly sudden, unexpected, even provocative nature of the effects produced.

The Installation

The installation spread in the 1970s. The artist himself designed the device for presenting his works to the public. These are often designed in such a way as to make contact with the visitor active, invited, for example, to enter the heart of a composite work, or else solicited in an interactive mode.

The proximity of the installation and the performance is due to an interweaving of art in life. But the installation most often takes place with the active physical presence of the artist. Unlike performance, installation continues to fall under the production regime of an artistic object.

The Body Art

The Body Art will finally leave us with a real embarrassment. Some commentators see it as a set of practices focused on the artist’s body’s direct involvement. It then cuts across extensive sections of performance art, to the point of sometimes seeming synonymous.

Others propose a much more circumscribed vision of it. Body art talents specify performance art by focusing on strictly bodily interventions, sometimes extreme, releasing meanings relating to sexuality, diseases, expansions, technological aspects of human functions, or gender assignment changes.
