The idea of the panorama is by no means new. As early as 1787, the Irish artist Robert Barker, who had been unsuccessful up to that point, registered his 360-degree picture at the London Patent Office. His first panorama (ancient Greek “pan” = “everything” and “horama” = “what was seen”) showed Edinburgh in an all-round perspective on over 280 square meters.

Barker’s idea quickly became a crowd puller. The emerging “bourgeoisie” demanded new forms of entertainment: travel reports, the first hot air balloon ride, and urbanization had awakened the people wanderlust. The panorama, as an art form of the industrial revolution, satisfied this longing.

Panorama is a perspective representation of landscapes or events that can be overlooked by several people at the same time from a fixed point. If the pictures are stationary, the cylindrical surfaces are called round pictures or circular paintings, the viewer being in the middle to view them.

How to start panoramic art?

Photo editing software assembles photos so well that the junctions are now completely invisible. Besides, the resolution of current cameras’ sensors makes it possible to design immense panoramas with a superb detail level.

The shooting’s principle is as follows. You will determine the exposure parameters then take the photos “as a result” by scanning the area that interests you and making the photos overlap each other.

To shoot quality panoramas, you need a tripod and your digital camera. This tripod should preferably be equipped with a panoramic head (this is the price to pay to have an impeccable assembly).

Unlike other heads that can be found on the market, this panoramic head allows you to precisely position the lens of your camera so that the axis of rotation is correctly fixed on the entrance pupil of said lens. The advantage of this system is that it will allow you to eliminate suddenly on the parallax errors that will appear between the photos.

The shooting is carried out as follows:

  • Choose the framing of your photo then put your tripod in place. Before choosing your focal length, remember that the wide-angle strongly distorts the outlook and, therefore, will create photos with stretched edges. As far as I’m concerned, I like to use the focal length at 50mm (24 x 36 equivalent).

  • Determine the speed and aperture settings for your photo series. To do so, put your camera in manual mode (M), then choose a relatively medium aperture value to have a good depth of field (f 8, for example). Press the shutter button halfway and adjust the speed until the correct exposure is obtained.

  • Exposure compensation: Now, see how the exposure behaves on the other photos you have to take and then determine the average speed. Except for a shadowy area or a very bright area (sunsets or indoor photos, for example), the exposure value should be almost identical between the different shots.

  • Focus by pressing the shutter button halfway, then disengage the autofocus from your lens. We must avoid at all costs that the camera refocuses at the risk of having different areas of sharpness on the photo.

  • Take the first photo and then rotate your tripod’s head so that the next image overlaps the previous photo by 25-30%. I advise you to frame vertically for horizontal panoramas and vice versa for vertical panoramas. It will leave more room for maneuver for cropping the panoramas in post-processing.

  • Proceed in the same way for the next shots.

If you don’t have a tripod, nothing is lost! It is quite possible to take panoramic photos by hand. Take, in this case, a mark on the ground and turn around this point. On the other hand, your photos are not perfectly horizontal and aligned. You will inevitably lose the picture when cropping. The additional advantage of the tripod when taking panoramas is that you will be able to work efficiently at slow speed and low sensitivity. Your creative potential is, therefore, much greater …

There is no limit to the number of photos you can take. Note, however, that if your digital camera is equipped with a 16 or 18 million pixel sensor, you quickly get very heavy photos. For information, the panoramic photo above is 500 MB (with all its layers) and this, with only jpeg photos! Suffice to say that it is better to have a powerful computer …

So now that your photos are taken, you have to assemble them.
